Introduction to the Comparative Study
This book was in my collection for quite some time. When I
acquired it, I planned to take notes and write a comparative
essay titled "A Study of Ebba Koch and Late P. N. OakтАЩs
Interpretations." However, due to various reasons, the project
was delayed. Now, I wish to continue the writing, present key
ideas in Marathi, and gauge readersтАЩ reactions.
Late P. N. OakтАЩs views on the Taj Mahal have permeated
the public mind over the years. We have already introduced his
biographical aspects in earlier discussions about his book
"NetajiтАЩs Encounters." Now, we analyze Ebba KochтАЩs work,
juxtaposing their interpretations in a balanced manner. As
OakтАЩs nephew, I might naturally emphasize his arguments more,
but I strive for objectivity.
Some of P. N. OakтАЩs core assertions include:
яБ╢ 1 Structure of the pinnacle and its symbolic elements
яБ╢ 2 Lotus petals forming an тАШOmтАЩ shape
яБ╢ 3 Findings based on Carbon-14 dating
Before delving into these aspects, letтАЩs review the bookтАЩs
general details. This 288-page publication, featuring 377
selected photographs and illustrations, was authored by Ebba
Koch, an Austrian scholar, who spent 10 years (1995-2005)
meticulously studying the Taj Mahal. She was a consultant to
the Archaeological Survey of India and also a Visiting Fellow at
HarvardтАЩs Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture.2024 EBook 214 The Comparative Study of Tah Mahal 9 New Light on Taj. 12 May 2025

Her approach is not outright dismissive but rather
diplomatic in its arguments. In one instance, she amusingly
describes IndiaтАЩs contrasting modernity, noting that while
foreign tourists withdraw money from an ATM, they must
maneuver through cattle wandering nearby!
My copy of this book was published by Thames & Hudson
(2006) and is available on Amazon for ┬г24.95.
